Fenugreek / Barik methi / micro green

Mothers (in most cases) play a very important role in a child's life. While it becomes difficult to handle a fussy eater, many indian moms prefer home cooked food which we call Satvik food. It is simple, easy to digest and has many benefits.

My mom like other moms too had a tough time when it came to cooking food. Daily we would ask the same question "What's for lunch / dinner?" I guess for moms that's the only question that keeps bothering them the entire day.

In my house, Fenugreek is something that gets used every now and then. I use it in vegetables including palak paneer, i make theplas (both with fresh and dry leaves) and parathas.

Not only i use it in food, but also to my hair. I add methi seeds to the coconut oil and apply it once a month (specially used to cure hair loss).

Since it has many benefits, my mom started planting it at home.

Fenugreek is a herb which is also known as Methi, Greek Hay, Greek clover, Fenugrec, Bird’s Foot, etc.

The leaves are rich in nutrition, vitamins, calcium, iron, etc. But some people are allergic to it. It doesn't suit everyone and hence you need to take care of it first.

It grows in rich soil. The preferred soil type is sandy and good drainage for better yield.
It can be grown in any container or ground. Since i don't have enough space i prefer growing it in pots. The plant does not like to be transplanted after germination, you should sow them directly in pot/ground.

In my blog, i'll show how to grow barik methi/ micro green in sandy soil. Methi is easiest to grow whether you have green fingers or not.
You need to buy fenugreek seeds as shown in the pic (they are easily available in grocery stores). There are two ways to plant seeds, either you directly sow them as shown in the video in my blog, or put the seeds in a container and cover it with water above the seed level. Soak them overnight. Drain the water and cover seeds with a muslin cloth and leave it in a dark place. The seeds will sprout in 2-3 days.

I prefer plastic tray to plant methi seeds

Here i've used sandy soil to sow seeds

My son is of great help when it comes to planting seeds. He loves to sow seeds. This has certainly increased his knowledge in terms of germination, how farmers grow food, what is organic food, etc. So, in a way it has helped him a lot and developed his liking towards plantation.

You don't need to bury the seeds very deep in the soil/sand. Once you've sowed, water it well and keep the soil moist, but do not over-water. Watch out for pest
I usually sow seeds twice a month, so that when the first set of barik methi is ready, my next set is halfway through.

Here is the picture of Day 4, just look at them, it's a treat for the eyes

This was the last batch of barik methi harvested, fresh leaves grown in our balcony garden.

A lot of people wanted to know and see the actual picture of how i had soaked methi seeds, so here it is

I had soaked it overnight, drained it and covered it with muslin cloth.

Here is the picture of seeds that have sprouted after 24 hours, not all seeds have sprouted, you can sprinkle very little water and cover it again. Keep it for a day and then plant it. Result is the same it's just another way to grow micro green.

People keep asking whether there is any secret to healthy plants, Yes, you can keep your plants healthy.

My next blog will be on Gardening tips and tricks. So stay tuned and check for more videos on you tube.

For now,
Save trees

    1. Thank you Sulu
Please try and share which method worked for you
direct sowing seeds in the sand or
soaking it in water first, letting it sprout and then planting them.
I've tried both, it's easy to grow and the fresh leaves will fill your entire house with aroma.
Sandy soil is much better than the normal soil which you get in the nursery. (now, this has worked all times, not that normal soil doesn't..but the sandy soil gives much faster results)
Thanks once again for reading my blog.

    1. Yes, save trees, plant more trees like neem, tulsi and peepal as it gives the maximum amount of oxygen (which we breathe)
